The oldest pub in the country, Perseverance has stood on Buitenkant Street, in Gardens, since it was built in 1808.
Known as Persies to locals, the heritage-listed building oozes colonial charm and serves as much as an historical attraction as it does a watering hole. It is rumoured to have been Cecil John Rhodes' local, and in 1985 won the first Pub of the Year award, pipping another 170 pubs to the post.
They still serve up a mean eisbein, great burgers and wood-fired pizzas, and everything else you would expect from a great sports bar. Cold beer, Guinness on tap, a fire roaring in the grate come winter - it doesn't get much better than this!
